Candidates for Dental Implants
You may qualify for implants if you are missing one, several, or all of your teeth. However, before recommending treatment, your dentist will carefully evaluate your oral health. Using x-rays and scans of your jaw, your practitioner will look for bone recession. Jaw atrophy follows tooth lost, and extensive recession can limit your candidacy for implants. However, in many cases, a bone graft or sinus lift can restore a sturdy base for implant posts. Certain conditions, such as periodontitis or an autoimmune disease, may limit your candidacy for treatment. We will carefully evaluate your candidacy before recommending dental implants.
Implant Surgery, Recovery, and Restoration
If your dentist determines that standard implants are right for you, we will refer you to an oral surgeon. We have working relationships with a number of excellent local doctors. We will coordinate with your surgeon to ensure outstanding care at every stage of your treatment. On the day of your surgery, your doctor will numb your jaw and gums. In most cases, he will also provide deeper sedation. After all medications take effect, your surgeon will create small incisions in the gums and place the implant posts in your jaw. Finally, the incisions are closed. It can take about four to six months to recover from implant surgery. We will often provide a temporary restoration to wear during your recovery. Once your jaw has healed, you will undergo a second surgery in which abutment pieces are attached to the implants. After about two weeks, proven the gums have healed, we can take impressions and begin crafting your permanent restoration.
We will coordinate with your surgeon to ensure outstanding care through every stage of your treatment.
All-on-4® implants are an alternative to standard implants that can often be placed and restored on the same day. It is usually recommended to patients who have experienced a mild degree of jaw atrophy but do not wish to undergo a bone graft.
The Remarkable Benefits of Dental Implants
Dental implants offer several unique benefits:
- Implant-supported restorations are more stable than any other type of restoration. Unlike removable dentures, they will never slip out of place, and in contrast to traditional dental bridges, they do not require alteration of healthy teeth.
- Implant-supported restorations offer an incredibly lifelike appearance. Your prosthetic will sit directly on your gums. It will not require attachment pieces, plastic bases, metal clips, or adhesive. Meanwhile, our lab uses advanced dental materials, so the denture will have a true-to-life color and sparkle.
- Implants are the only restorative treatment that can prevent jawbone recession following tooth loss. This benefit alone makes them one of the wisest investments you can make in a compromised smile.
